Bead Giveaway: Faux Crystals

Multicolored Faux Crystal Bicone Beads

Just like seed beads, bicone crystals are great building blocks for beadwork designs. They are beautiful and versatile, and come in a wide variety of colors and sizes. But unlike seed beads, crystals require a lot of commitment when used in large quantities. Not only are they pricey, but creating an elaborate design that relies on crystals is an exercise in balance. It takes a lot of planning when you’re adding so much sparkle.

In my collection of unique acrylic and lucite beads, I have a little stash of crystal-like 4mm bicone beads. At first glance, it’s difficult to tell these inexpensive beauties from their more precious counterparts. I’ve always been particularly fond of a set of mixed bicones. Something about the variety of colors was instantly appealing, and I’ve held on to them just for the pleasure of their colors.

Now it’s time to find a good home for these beads. Apart from the distinctive sparkle and a vast difference in weight, they are actually a pretty good likeness of Austrian crystal bicones, and would work well in practice pieces. I think they would make an amazing sun catcher! I’m also giving away a handful of dusty blue 4mm bicones, and some purple 4mm rounds. There are about 20 grams of each type - enough to make something big, or a lot of little designs!

  11. Well, I've heard people say that whatever project they are currently working on is their favorite, and I suppose this "rule" must apply to crystals as well -- earlier today, I pulled out some White Opal Satin bicones. They came in rather a large order of crystals that I made, and I was positive that they were labeled wrong -- for one thing, they weren't really white, and for another, the computer did NOT convey this particular color accurately. So they are special to me! And I love the swirls of very very pale blues with similarly pale grays... Since they are satin finished, they are not as sparkly as some others -- if I had to pick sparkly I'd pick Fern 2XAB (guess what else I've been working with!) -- but, I think almost as much as I like the swirled colors, the little story behind them makes the White Opal Satin dear to me.

  20. hands down, Montana Blue is my favorite. the first rivoli i ever bought was montana blue, and to this day i haven't used it in any project. it's just so beautiful by itself that i can't think of a beading project that would showcase it's beauty.

i don't even particularly like blues! greens and oranges speak to me more. but Montana Blue has something to it that just speaks to me. beautiful, beautiful color.

  21. I am now partial to the caribbean blue opal. They remind me so much of the color of my mother's eyes before they were dulled when she got ill. I try to incorporate a bit of this color in things I bead to remind me of her.
