I have always been a sucker for
color lined beads, even before I discovered how much fun it is to weave with them. Many years ago, I discovered that the mixed lots of vintage beads at my local craft store occasionally contained batches of 4mm plastics cubes lined with blue, purple and pink, and I simply had to have them all.
I purchased every package of beads I could get my hands on, and spent countless hours sifting and sorting through them until I had a pretty nice collection of these color lined cubes. They were by far some of my favorite finds ever.
I wasn’t quite so attached to them that I refused to use them in art projects. I even used a bunch of them to wire wrap a decorative fruit basket, and then gave it away as a gift. It was hard to part with them, but I had so many that it seemed like I would never run out.
And sure enough, I decided that I no longer wanted to bead with plastics, making a statement about the origins of the materials that we use in our everyday lives. So now I have all of these pretty little beads and they’re not being put to good use. It’s time that they found a new owner!

My favorite is the round (as in Japanese or Czech) seed bead. I too love the color-lined bead especially the black-lined crystal. The next favorite would be cubes and triangles.

ReplyDeleteTruth be told, as long as I'm using the better seed beeds: Japanese, Czech - all the shapes and sizes are the same - I'm happy!
I have two favorites, but one may not be considered a seed bead so I'll include them both. I love 3-cuts for the texture, finish and that little something extra they give. My new favorite embellishment is long magatamas, they make a luscious spiral.
ReplyDeleteFirst, thank you for your website. I have learned so many beading techniques from you, and I have since started volunteering at a middle school, teaching a beading club to the adolescents. They are falling in love with beading just like I am. I really like round size 11 seed beads, but I really like all different kinds of beads. One of my favorite bead mixes is a TOHO blue water seed bead/bugle mix, I made a spiral necklace with them and it turned out beautifully. If you would select me for the giveaway, I would share your beads with the middle school kids. They would love to use these beads. It is fun to watch the kids look at the different forms and colors of the beads, and imagine how they will use them. I hope you will select us for the bead giveaway. Thanks for all that you do.

Cubes are fine, but most of the times I use 2 mm rounds. However, cubes goes well with my fsvorite tehnique - herringbone. Love your blog, I come here once a week to see what's new.

My favorite is a gourd shape. I don't find them very often, but occasionally I find cheap glass gourds that look like two druks pushed together with the hole going lengthwise. I beaded the bottom and gave it a tassel for a wind chime I made. It came out lovely!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite seed bead shape is the Miyuki Delica, and second is the cube as they both are perfect for peyote stitch. I am a bit OCD (HA!) and have trouble with randomness. Peyote has the precision that I need in beading. I am in a Jewelry Design Course that is helping me learn and discover a more fluid skill. But my stand-by is peyote bracelets, etc. with Delicas and cubes!
