Inspired by Starfish

This weekend I celebrated Canada Day at the seawall with my family. One of my favorite sights to see every time we go are the brightly colored starfish that line the rocky shore. We once watched a seagull swallow a purple starfish in three big gulps. It was quite a show.

Even though they aren't really seasonal creatures, starfish are a fantastic symbol of summer. Any time there's a starfish around, it makes one want to grab a towel and head for the beach. Other summery and exotic mood boosting creatures include sand dollars, sea turtles, and tropical fish.

In our area, most of the visible starfish are purple and orange. These colors have inspired many of my own aquatic creations, but it's fun to mix things up once in awhile, too. My favorite starfish color is bright blue.

The shape of starfish, and the mood they imply, is ideal for jewelry. There's nothing like a cheerful little starfish to add some personality to your wardrobe. There are many sources for authentic, dried starfish to use in crafts, as well as handmade facsimiles. And of course, who can resist a Swarovski crystal starfish?
