Work in Progress: Spring Colors

This week I’m feeling a little slow and distracted in my workspace, and I’ve taken a couple of days to rest my creative muscles. Sometimes it’s good to just step away for awhile, and when it’s time to work again, there’s that much more enthusiasm.

I’m still just getting started on the new medallion pendant, but I’m loving the colors so far. Before I get any further, I’ll have to clean up that bead spill! I’ve recently switched to Nymo for embroidery, and although the technique doesn’t really call for conditioning, I find that the extra stretch involved in waxing the thread really helps. Plus the beeswax smells divine.

Medallion and Collar in Progress

I’m also testing out colors for a new collar idea. It’s a spring/summer palette with yellow, pink and chartreuse, inspired by 1960’s patterns. We’ll see how it goes!

What are you making this week?

  1. Yellow, Pink and Chartreuse - that is very fresh and Spring like.
Unfortunately right now my project is on hold - I ordered some 20 gauge, 14 k rose gold filled wire and the USPS has lost the package. I've spent the last 3 days on the phone with my local Post Office and they keep saying they'd check into it and call me back . . . then naturally I never hear back and have to call them again. Aggravating! :(

    1. There's nothing worse than waiting for a late package - especially if it has beading stuff! I hope it all works out soon.

    2. Well my package is still "lost" but Rio Grande, the supplier that I ordered from, came through like a superhero. They replaced my lost order and shipped it (at their expense) first class, priority. I just received it today. Now that's a company I will continue to do business with. :)

  2. What do you use for the base of your bead embroidery? Is some kind on thin wool ok? Here in Finland nobody's selling Stiff Stuff and I have not found anything that I like to use for beading foundation.
How thin is that blue you are working with that medallion? Red scarabe looks great

    1. I use ordinary 100% wool felt for both the beadwork and backing. I like the non-plastic qualities, but for me this method is comfortable because I first learned to do bead embroidery for garments and we never used an interfacing. If you find a material that you like for embroidery, but want to have a steady surface, working from an embroidery hoop works really well. I skip this step to reduce waste, since you can only work with larger pieces from the center out, but it does help when you're just getting comfortable with embroidery.
