Spotlight: Etsy Bead Embroidery Guild

Bead embroidery is one of the most exciting mediums available to bead lovers, simply because it has no limits. Nearly anything that can be sewn or glued is fair game for bead embroidery: from sequins and cabochons, to ribbon and thrift store treasures. Bead embroidery is also one of the only techniques that moves seamlessly from jewelry to non-wearable designs, décor and sculpture. It is the technique for imaginative beaders.

One group that doesn’t shy away from the challenge is the Etsy Bead Embroidery Guild. This team of shop owners is small – with a maximum membership of 50 at any time – yet their designs are anything but. Many members have been honored with awards from some prestigious competitions, and been featured in popular beading magazines. Here are just a few of their recent creations.

Beaded Eye Rings

Eye of the Beholder Beaded Ring Set

I’ve grown incredibly fond of making herringbone rings, and I find that other styles just don’t appeal to me as much. Not only are they really simple and fast to make, but they are just so cute and wearable. I’m always looking for new ways to incorporate different patterns and shapes into the design to make each one unique.

Way back during my Ring a Day challenge, I made a herringbone ring with a shell coin as the focal. It turned out so nice, that I’ve made quite a few since, but none of them were quite like the original. The combination of shape and color made it look just like a misty, mysterious eye. Over the past year, I’ve pondered other ways to incorporate an eye design into a herringbone ring.

While experimenting with different Egyptian inspired designs, I came up with the idea of using a tortoiseshell bead and a white herringbone increase to make a more realistic, if not a bit feline, eye ring. And since the theme of this month’s April’s Army fundraiser is ‘beauty’, it seemed like the perfect fit.

I used some eye-shadowy colors for the base of each ring, and created an eye shape with a black lining. I carefully selected tortoiseshell beads that had a central black accent for the iris and pupil, and made some pretty interesting, wearable eyes.

These two rings are available as a set from the April’s Army shop, which opens today. All proceeds from the shop will benefit an artist who needs a hand up.

Here are some of my favorite jewelry designs from the shop:

Click on the images to learn more about the designs and the artists behind them.

And I have to give a shout-out to one of my all-time favorite Etsy sellers, UglyBaby, who is donating for the first time this month.

There are lots of beautiful, weird, and wonderful products on sale until the end of this week. This month, the team is raising money to help an artist go to school and get her dream job! You can learn more about the shop and this month’s recipient on the April's Army Facebook page.

Poster Sketch Roundup

Beaders, I have a secret to confess.

When I decided to leave Etsy and try out a more mature venue, I had lots of reasons and justifications for doing so. And the longer I stayed away, the more I felt that it was the right choice, if not for me, than at least for the integrity of my beadwork. Unfortunately, integrity doesn’t always pay the bills, so I’m spreading out to different baskets again.

My confession? I am having so much fun on Etsy! I had forgotten just how easy it is to make beautiful treasuries with millions of products to choose from. It’s a lot more work, making sure that the gorgeous items with perfect photographs aren’t made by tiny children in huge sweatshops, but it’s worth it!

This is instant-gratification creativity at it’s finest. There’s absolutely nothing to clean up when you’re done, and no waiting for glue to dry. Here’s what I’ve been making lately…

Beading Tutorials for a Cause

Tree Fringe Herringbone Lariat Tutorial

If you’re familiar with the humor of Regretsy, you might also know about the spin-off Etsy team April’s Army, and their fantastic monthly charity collective. For one week every month, artists donate their best, boldest and weirdest designs to help raise money for another artist in need.

Donating designs for worthy causes is something I really enjoy doing - it allows me to give the best part of myself and do something meaningful. Although my love of Etsy has tapered off in the last year or so, I know how successful collective style shops can be. Last year, I couldn’t make rings for Help the Gulf Coast fast enough!

So, I joined April’s Army, and got to work on some unique designs to share. Unfortunately, labor disruptions with Canada Post made shipping a little too uncertain. So this month I donated something that I think Inspirational Beading readers can really appreciate.

Two personal use copies of my favorite tutorial - The Leafy Fringe Herringbone Lariat - are available from the April’s Army shop and going fast! The tutorial includes a full color and a text only PDF, so you can print out a portable version without using up all of your printer ink.

There are lots of other amazing things to buy as well. The proceeds from the June shop will help a family that really needs a hand up. You can learn more about the fundraiser and the recipient on the April’s Army Facebook page.

Here are a few of my favorite jewelry designs from the shop, but there are lots of other fun categories and designs to see. Please do check out the store, drop a few hearts, and if you see something you love, snag it or promote it! It’s all for a great cause.

Click images to see the listing and learn more about the artist behind these designs.

Here's to a great week!

Quick Inspiration: Contests and Catalogs

Auntie's Beads 'Battle of the Beads' Design Contest

Battle of the Beads

Joining in beading contests can be a great way to ignite your imagination. When you’ve been stuck for new ideas, being given a theme to work with for a challenge can open up new design possibilities, and inspire you to use new color palettes, techniques or materials.

The Auntie’s Beads blog team recently announced an all new beading challenge for designers called Battle of the Beads. Anyone can submit an entry of a beaded creation made primarily with products from Auntie’s Beads.

The entries will be paired off to compete in a tournament style voting process, where readers can choose their favorite and send it off into the next round. The last two designs standing will compete against each other for the top prize - a $250 gift certificate for Auntie’s Beads! The runner up will also receive a gift certificate worth $100.

To enter your design, send in a 400 X 400 or larger JPEG image, along with your email address, name and materials list. To learn more about the contest, visit Battle of the Beads on the store blog. The deadline for entries is September 30th, 2010.

New Etsy Backlinks

SoopSee - Turn Your Etsy Shop into Your Website

Savvy Etsy sellers know that having plenty of quality links pointing to your shop is a great way to stay visible with search engines. And if those links are also associated with fantastic pictures of your product, that’s even better.

Many of Etsy’s Storque articles tell us that blogging can be a great way to create some of these backlinks, as well as establish an online persona that will create interest in our designs. We also use Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and other social networking sites to spread the word about what we make.

With so many different sites to maintain, it’s hard to step back and get a good look at our Etsy business from all viewpoints. Luckily, that is all about to change.

An interesting new seller tool called SoopSee is making it easy for Etsy sellers to gather up all of their online activities into one place. With just a few simple clicks, you can import your blog RSS feed and all of your current Etsy listings into one place, plus provide contact information for any shop or venue that you sell from.

Your SoopSee profile is like a landing page for your business - a place to see everything that you do in one glance. The developers are hard at work, planning new features and sites to include, like Flickr. Anyone can start a SoopSee profile for free, or take advantage of some extra features with a pro account.

Poster Sketch: Columns of Color

Have you ever found something so fun to do that you get totally hung up on it? Like when you learn a new stitch or beading technique, and suddenly have ideas for 50 different color variations? It’s always a thrill to dive into something new, especially when you really enjoy it.

Lately, I’ve been totally obsessed with making striped treasuries for the Oh Canada Team. I started with one, and suddenly my mind is filled with four-color palettes that must be curated! Perhaps some of these colorful columns will give you a little inspiration for you next color adventure. How about a stripey spiral rope, or a color-block cuff?

Poster Sketch: Team Oh Canada

Canada is an interesting place. It’s an enormous country, in terms of land mass, but the habitable terrain is limited. Compared to countries of similar size, our population is tiny. When Canadians travel abroad, people say the most curious things to us. When we visit the United States, we dread the inevitable “Do you know Bob Smith from Toronto?”. When we visit Europe, people are shocked that we’ve never been to cities on the other side of our own country.

Although we are few, we aren’t exactly as connected as people may think we are. And that’s why it’s so great to be able to interact with other Canadians over the internet. Recently, a new Etsy Team was formed that is open to Canadian sellers of all kinds - giving us all a chance to meet each other, offer support, and share our experiences.

The Oh Canada Team is still in it’s developing stages, but there are already a great deal of unique and interesting sellers in the group. This week’s poster sketch features just a handful of the amazing bead and jewelry designs from team members.

You can see even more great designs by adding the tag “OhCanadaTeam” to your searches on Etsy.com.

Poster Sketch: Handmade Artists Team

Being a crafter in the internet age is a truly remarkable thing. We have access to an endless supply of materials from all over the world. We can learn a new skill by downloading a PDF or watching a video. We can create and print patterns from our favorite images. And the best part - we can meet with other crafters to share ideas, knowledge, and support.

One of the most active teams in the Etsy community is the HAF Team. The group is made up of members of the Handmade Artists Forum - a place to meet with others who make and sell handmade products. Though they may create different things, these crafters and designers have come together to share, learn and promote handmade.

This week’s Poster Sketch is a delightful collection of bead treasures from HAF Etsy sellers. You can also see the team’s other unique creations by searching for “HAFTeam” on Etsy.com.

Poster Sketch: CafeMoms

Ask any beader what he or she loves about the craft, and they will most likely tell you that it is a relaxing - even Zen-like - experience. Beading and creating jewelry is a meditative art that allows us to escape into a world of pretty, shiny things. Busy moms are often the most appreciative of beading time, and most of us would rather play with beads than read a book or indulge in a bubble bath. As an added bonus, we can use our hobby to earn a few extra dollars for all the things we need for our little ones.

There are a great many Street Teams on Etsy that are dedicated to busy moms who make and sell just about anything you can imagine. This week’s Poster Sketch features some of the wonderful jewelry designs of the CafeMoms Team. You can see more of this team’s creations by searching “CafeMom Team” on Etsy.com.

Birthday Treasuries

As we grow older, it becomes important to appreciate the little things in life. It keeps us young, and keeps us sane. To celebrate my birthday today, I ordered pizza and made a treasury. Perhaps it says something about where my focus is these days, but it was a real treat to find that the treasury clock was almost at zero today, and I was able to create a collection of my favorite things.

Although the weather has been very warm for January, it is awfully gloomy and gray. I don’t mind staying in doors in bad weather, but it does put a hold on photography when there isn’t any good sunlight. So I filled my treasury with warm, green things to remind myself that spring is just around the corner.

Dreaming of Spring Treasury

As an extra birthday treat, I was also featured in two amazing treasuries this week.

You Never Bring Me Flowers Anymore is another great collection that can take our minds off of the weeks of winter ahead. Each of these beaded flowers was created by a member of the Etsy BeadWeavers team. Team member kraftymax did an amazing job putting this garden together.

You Never Bring Me Flowers Treasury

Why Not is one of my favorite treasuries to date. At first glance, it looks like a random collection of favorites. But upon closer inspection, you can see a theme of shapes and colors. Its slinky, and blue, and beautiful! This treasury was assembled by SFBeads.

Happy Birthday to all Capricorns out there!

Poster Sketch: Etsy BeadWeavers

Happy New Year! Isn’t it interesting how the hope of a bright future seems just a little more possible at the dawn of a new year? And with a new decade also just beginning, the possibilities for change and success are even greater.

To celebrate the first day of 2010, I have put together a colorful collection of items from one of my favorite groups of beaders - the Etsy BeadWeavers Team. When I joined this amazing group of talented artists, I was looking forward to participating in challenges. Inspiration Tip: Sharing Etsy Treasuries

Coral and Chartreuse Treasury by bstudio.etsy.com

Every week, I search through the zillions of Etsy listings, hunting for 16 amazing pieces of jewelry or beaded art. Using Etsy’s Poster Sketch tool, I share my finds here on Inspirational Beading. The entire process is a great way to meet other artists and to see new works of bead art.

Recently, I was asked to share the secret behind the Poster Sketch segments. The technique I use to share my Etsy finds can also be used to show completed treasuries on a blog or website. This process is great if you’ve been featured in a treasury, or have made one that you want to share, and you want to preserve it. Because Etsy treasuries expire, it’s nice to have a record of the short time in the spotlight. Making a treasury is a lot of work, and the results are often beautiful. Keeping and displaying your favorite treasuries can be a great source of inspiration in the future.

I’m going to list each step as clearly as possible, so if you’re just getting to know your computer or the internet, hopefully these instructions will be helpful to you. Note: I’m working with Windows and Mozilla Firefox, but these steps are pretty universal for PC users.

One: Open your internet browser and find the treasury that you wish to save. Scroll down so that all of the items are centered in the window, and nothing is cut off.

Two: Take a screenshot of the page to capture the treasury. Hold Ctrl on your keyboard, and press Print Screen [Prt Scr].

Pre-shrink the Page

Three: Open the Paint tool in Accessories. To avoid any unwanted border on your image, you can pre-shrink the page. Scroll down to the bottom right hand corner of the white canvas, and use your cursor to grab and drag the corner of the page up and to the left. Shrink the canvas so that it is smaller than a treasury.

Four: Paste the treasury screenshot onto the page. Hold Ctrl and press V. Save this page if you want - you can always delete it later.

Select the Cut Tool

Five: Click on the tool icon that shows a dotted rectangle. Use your mouse to draw a box around the treasury, only capturing what you want to show. Leave a few mm of boarder around the edge, and try to make all of the sides evenly spaced.

Cut Away Only the Treasury

Six: From the Edit drop down menu, select Cut, or press Ctrl + X. Open a New blank page in Paint. Do not save the changes to the current file.

Seven: Pre-shrink the canvas, and paste your treasury snippet onto the blank page [Ctrl + V]. Save the new file with a unique name - I usually use Month/Year/Curator. Be sure to save it as a JPEG file, not a BMP.

Now that you have this image of your treasury, you can upload it and share it almost anywhere you want to. A few good places to show off an Etsy treasury are your Facebook page, Flickr pool, and your blog. Most blog platforms allow you to upload and display images from your computer; but with a few extra steps, you can show off your treasury, and improve the look and SEO of your blog at the same time.

One: You will need to upload your treasury snippet to an image hosting site like Photobucket. Be sure to upload it to the correct album or sub-album. If necessary, relocate the file before completing the next steps.

Grabbing a URL from Photobucket

Two: Copy the Direct Link URL for your hosted image.

Three: At the point in your blog text where you want to display your treasury, type the following code:

<img src="YourImage" alt="ImageTitle" title="ImageTitle">

Replace YourImage with the URL for your picture. Replace ImageTitle with a name for your picture. The alt tag will create a text caption if viewers have HTML turned off, or if the image doesn’t load properly. You’ve probably seen these before. Instead of a picture, a box with a red X will appear, and if the alt tag is used, the name of the image will also show. The title tag will create the yellow caption that appears when you hover your cursor over an HTML image. Both of these tags can also help your picture and blog show up in search engines, so it’s a good idea to use relevant keywords in your image title.

You will need to add this code in the HTML editor of your blog platform. If you would like the image to be a clickable link to another destination, you can highlight the code, and use the link tool of your blog editor to add the destination URL. You can also add the code by hand. It will look like this:

<a href="Destination URL" target="_blank"><img src="YourImage" alt="ImageTitle" title="ImageTitle"></a>

If you want to link back to the actual treasury that you are sharing, remember that Etsy treasuries eventually expire. Broken links aren’t good for SEO (Search Engine Optimization), so it’s a good idea to remove the link code after the treasury has expired.

The target=“_blank” code will make the link open in a new window (unless the viewer right clicks or has tabbed browsing set up). This will make sure that readers don’t lose track of your blog when checking out your link.

Four: Set the alignment for your image.

To center the picture between paragraphs, enter the HTML on a new line, and add paragraph tags to center it. It will look like this:

<p align="center"><img src="YourImage" alt="ImageTitle" title="ImageTitle"></p>

You can also make the text of your blog post wrap around the image if it is on the left or right of the page. To do this, add the code to the first line of the paragraph where you would like the image to be. Replace <p align="center"> with

All About the Blues Treasury by SimpleSundries.etsy.com

<p style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 10px 10px 10px 10px;"> for right hand images

or

<p style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px;"> for left hand images.

To make a handy reference of the HTML code, you can highlight and copy it, and save it to a text file, like Notepad or WordPad.

Now that you can preserve your favorite Etsy treasuries, there’s even more incentive to get out and try one. To find out when a new spot will open up, check in with the Treasury Clock on Craftopolis.com. It keeps track of Treasury Main and Treasury West, and provides a countdown to the next opening. Have fun!
