Bees Heart Honey Necklace Tutorial

It’s the first day of September, which means that no matter how many more sunny days we may have to look forward to, it’s officially time to say goodbye to summer. With help from the Monochrome Bead Box from Blueberry Cove Beads, I decided to create a pretty necklace with a hint of summer colors, inspired by bees and honey.

Bees Heart Honey Necklace Tutorial

This asymmetrical design is super easy to stitch, and you can create it with just about anything that you’ve got in your stash. You’ll need two focal beads of similar shape and size to get the effect – otherwise you can mix and match any seed beads and round beads that you’ve got on hand. I’m using a pair of faux lava rock hearts from the Monochrome Box in black and white; accents of yellow and topaz bring out the summery honey bee vibe. Have fun experimenting with different palettes of your own!

Materials:

About 4 yards of Fireline or your favorite beading thread
2 x 18-25 mm focal beads
2 8mm rose beads
11 6mm druks
22 5mm howlite beads
44 size 8 seed beads (yellow)
26 size 8 seed beads (black)
4 grams size 11 seed beads
Button clasp of your choice

Bees Heart Honey Necklace:

1. Attach a stop bead to a 2 yard (1.8 m) length of thread, leaving a 10 inch (25 cm) tail. String on one 11/o, one 8/o, one 5mm, one 8/o, and repeat. Add one 11/o, one 8/o, one 11/o and one druk. Slide all of the beads down to the stop bead.

2. Pick up 7 size 11/o seed beads, and pass back up through the druk again. Pull snug to form a loop of seed beads around the druk. Repeat to add a second loop.

3. String on one 11/o, and one 8/o, followed by the same pattern from step 1. Repeat until you have 4 looped druks.

4. String on one 11/o, one 8/o, one focal bead, one 8/o, one 11/o, and one rose bead. Add two loops of seven seed beads around the rose.

5. Repeat the pattern from steps 1-3 until you have added 3 druks. Add one 11/o, one 8/o, one 11/o and the second rose bead. Add seed bead loops to the rose.

6. String on one 11/o, one 8/o, and the second focal bead. Add one 8/o bead, then repeat the pattern again until you’ve added 4 more looped druks.

8. Pass back through the first 2 seed beads from the set of 10. Continue through the 8/o, 11/o, and druk and pull snug. Weave around the loops in the druk and retrace the thread path to secure the button. Weave any remaining thread into the beadwork, tying 2 half-hitch knots, and trim.

9. Remove the stop bead from the start of the necklace. Pick up enough seed beads to form a loop around your button. Pass back through the first seed bead again, and through the following beads to the nearest druk. Retrace the thread path to add strength to the loop, then weave in any remaining thread and trim.

Happy beading!

Work in Progress: Tropical Coconut

This week I’m finally going to use some of my blue coconut daggers. Probably.

I had a great idea for incorporating them into a scalloped St. Petersburg chain necklace. I’m not entirely certain that the shape of the daggers will work with the stitch, but I won’t know until I’m more than halfway finished with the design. Fingers crossed! Even if it doesn’t work out, I needed to revisit the design again anyway because I’m hoping to create a PDF tutorial for it later this year.

Tropical Blue Dagger Necklace in Progress

I’m also working on this week’s mini collar. I’ll leave all of the details for Saturday, but it is going really well so far. Although I’m only two projects in, I’m still very happy with how well the challenge turning out. I’ve got so much inspiration for my tray of drops and daggers now that I’m on a mission to use them.

What are you making this week?

Wardrobe Inspiration: Spring Crunch

I didn’t expect to have quite so much fun with the Pantone-inspired spring bead picks this week, but once I got going it was hard to stop. By removing the least inspiring color – Rose Quartz – I was left with 9 gorgeous colors to experiment with. Three color trios just weren’t enough! It’s been quite a while since we’ve had a fashion collage, and I always like to play with different jewelry styles to see how they’ll look in an ensemble. Pantone colors are one of my favorite inspirations for the Wear It Twice collage, which features one great statement necklace and two outfit options to showcase it with.

Spring Crunch

I decided to start the first palette with Green Flash, which I think had a lot more potential than just an aquatic-looking palette. I was really wishing for a more orange-y color to work with here, which I think would have made for an awesome tropical themed palette. Instead, I added Buttercup yellow and Lilac Gray for a rather crisp and fresh palette. This trio really brings to mind the first flowers of the season, as well as those first few shoots of wild grass and the subtle sunshine of spring.

The necklace I found is so delicious with loads of chunky yellow beads in a multistrand design. I also included some lovely leaf earrings and a super chunky lavender bangle. It was rather difficult to find garments and accessories that were close in hue to Green Flash. For the casual outfit I ended up subbing Buttercup for a pale crème yellow top. The green frock dress is definitely my favorite of the two, and would make a gorgeous backdrop for our necklace.

Multistrand necklace tutorials are always easy to find – the trick was choosing just a few to share this time! My favorite is a wonderfully chunky multistrand necklace by Restyle Restore Rejoice featuring multicolored stones. This one would be super easy to adapt to any palette that you like. The best feature is the variety of textures and shapes in the strands, which really brings out the beauty of the beads.

To get a look that’s a little more similar to our Buttercup necklace, this turquoise necklace project from Panda Hall is a great way to go. I love the suede cord straps and the easy seed-bead gather. You could also do this project with a spreader bar. I’d love to try it with some wood or tagua hoops to anchor the strands.

I wasn’t able to track down any faceted bangle tutorials, but I did find one amazing polymer clay project that would look gorgeous in our palette. This tutorial is by CW Art and is featured in the Craftster forums. The two-tone design is great for showcasing a favorite palette. I’m particularly fond of the striped embellishment!

For the leaf earrings, I found a wonderful embellished earring project on Fire Mountain Gems that uses leather scraps and an assortment of tiny beads. This design would be so easy to adapt for your tastes and stash. Just picture it in bright green with little aqua dew-drop crystals, or perhaps some lampwork ladybugs!

What’s your favorite color palette for spring or floral inspired projects?

Summer Bead Inspirations

This month’s bead giveaway has been drawn. Congratulations to our winner, and thank you so much for to everyone who entered! This month I asked about your favorite summer inspirations. Lauren had the winning comment, and she lists sunshine in the trees as the ultimate idea starter for summer designs.

There is definitely something uplifting about viewing lush branches on a bright backdrop of blue sky, with plenty of light shining through. These bead picks capture the essence of those carefree summer moments.

Spring Flower Beaded Bracelet Tutorial

Sometimes you just want to have a little fun with your beads! This cute bracelet tutorial from our beading friends at Panda Hall features a bright palette and a simple floral motif that you can weave with ease. The basic version uses acrylic beads for a very lightweight bracelet, but the wire based weave would stand up to just about any round beads your creativity demands. It would look fabulous with Swarovski neon pearls!

Yellow Flower Acrylic Beaded Bracelet

Spring is coming and flower jewelry is very suitable to dress for this season. There are many beaded flower patterns on picture sites like Pinterest, and when searching for beaded flowers, you will see lots of complicated and delicate designs. This yellow flower bracelet project, however, is quite simple and it is suitable for jewelry beginners, too.

To make the yellow flower bracelet, you will need:

6mm yellow acrylic beads
8mm green acrylic beads
Crimp beads
Tiger tail wire
Toggle clasp
Wire cutting pliers
Flat nose pliers

Begin by making the basic flower pattern: Take 60cm of tiger tail wire, and use a crimp bead to fasten the wire to the clasp. Then, string 8 yellow beads to the wire and make a loop by threading the wire back through the 1st bead added.

String a green bead on the tiger tail, and thread the wire through the 6th yellow bead added in the previous step. Tighten the wire and the first flower is made.

Beaded Yellow Flower Bracelet Tutorial

To begin the next flower, add 2 new yellow beads to the tiger tail, and thread the wire back through the 5th and 6th beads on the flower. Thread the wire through the 2 newly added beads again.

Add 6 yellow beads to complete the flower shape, and pass up through the bottom of the 2 beads added in the last step. Thread on a green bead and pass through the 4th yellow bead just added.

When the flower pattern reaches your ideal length, you can thread a crimp bead and the other half of the toggle clasp on the wire. Thread the wire back through the crimp bead and pinch with your pliers or crimping tool. Trim the extra wire down and you have finished the whole yellow flower bracelet.

Beaded Yellow Flower Bracelet Project

If you like, you can choose red beads and green pearl beads or glass beads, too. What do you think about this flower bracelet design?

Many thanks to the designers at Panda Hall for sharing this fun spring tutorial with Inspirational Beading!

Autumn Color Inspiration

Another bead giveaway has come to a close. Thank you so much to everyone who entered to win the fall treasures bead mix!

This month I asked about your favorite fall colors. Our winner, Estra, chose the combination of brown, orange and yellow. These colors definitely bring to mind the beautiful colors of autumn foliage, fall harvests, and cozy sweaters.

Fall Jewelry Colors Part One

Although the colors that we associate with the seasons are very much ingrained, there can be subtle differences in our ideal palettes, influenced by anything from our childhood experiences to the region in which we live. So although we often think of oranges and yellows as traditional fall colors, it’s certainly not unusual to incorporate greens, purples, and even blues.

This year, the Pantone fall color line up for women’s fashion is definitely unconventional. There isn’t a trace of orange at all, and there is an abundance of red and magenta apparent in colors like Aurora, Sangria, Mauve Mist and color of the year, Radiant Orchid. Even the Royal Blue hides a tiny hint of pink. Compare it to the fall palette for 2010, which includes nearly a full rainbow of colors, and this mix looks a little jarring at first. But is it really so strange?

Misted Yellow by Bibhu Mohapatra Pantone Fall 2014 Fashion Colors

In a new seasonal collage series this month, I’m taking on the challenge of mixing Pantone picks into trios that look more traditional than the entire palette at a glance. When mixed in the right proportions, any colors can be made to create a certain look or mood, and I hope to do just that - making fall fashions work with all these pinks and purples. Each collage will feature a fabulous statement necklace as always, and a few choice accessories to help inspire great fall designs.

I decided to go with an easy color first, and started my experiment with Misted Yellow, which does look like autumn all on it’s own. After eliminating a few more obvious colors, and ensuring I had enough left over to make two more trios, I finished the palette with Radiant Orchid and Cognac. Then I set out to make purple look at home in October!

Octoberberry

Finding the right hues wasn’t an easy task. Misted Yellow was particularly tough to match without accidentally going too pastel or beige. Cognac’s soft and chocolaty look was difficult to uncover under mounds of rich leathers and orangey browns. Finally I had some pieces that I was happy with, including a gorgeous statement necklace with metallic purple chain that almost perfectly matches Radiant Orchid. The hints of yellow sealed the deal. Though it doesn’t match in the least, I still couldn’t resist includin a bright yellow bangle, with a dark amethyst druzy in the center.

Work in Progress: Turquoise and Yellow

I’ve been so busy working on top secret projects these past few months, that I haven’t had any true works in progress to share. It is kind of fun to look at a piece I’m working on just as the beads – I’m looking forward to comparing all of these snapshots to the finished work when it’s all complete. I’m going to do my best to squeeze in a side project or two so I can share a little beadwork as well.

Right now I’m working with a really fun combination of turquoise blue and lemon yellow, plus black and white Rizos. I’ve had a lot of opportunities to work with Rizos lately, and they are incredibly versatile – much more so than regular drops. The small ends make them perfect for accents that replace other seed beads, and the long shape is really elegant in all kinds of fringe.

Turquoise and Yellow Beadwork in Progress

As soon as this project is complete, I’m embarking on a fantastic collar adventure. My African Christmas beads are washed and set out to dry right now. Can’t wait!

Work in Progress: Bee Collar

The past week has been a very busy one at our house, with lots of work and plenty of fun summer activities. For the most part, I’ve had very little time for beading, and when I do I’m often too tired. You know you’re exhausted when beading is too much work. So, the necklace that I was hoping to start on a few days ago, and hoping to be finished by now, is only just under way. It’s already turning out great though.

I really had a craving for black and yellow, so I decided to whip up a quick daisy collar. And since I didn’t want to skimp on the yellow, I reversed the colors and put the white at the center. I’m also putting a flower on every stitch, which at first I worried would look too busy. Instead, I think it will give the impression of a continuous chain of flowers, rather than a row of embellishments, since the background is so simple. I definitely wouldn’t want to have less yellow with spaced flowers.

Daisy Chain Collar in Progress

I’m also still working on a patterned cuff in black and golden yellow. It’s going much quicker than the prototype I made, which used Czech seed beads. I’d almost forgotten how much larger Japanese seed beads can be. The new bracelet will have far fewer rows and a bolder look than the first. It’s going to be a part of the top secret project, and it’s definitely a favorite so far. More on that in just a few short months!

Work in Progress: Black and Yellow

So many good things are happening in my workspace right now, I don’t even know where to begin. I’ve just poured out three lovely Japanese seed bead colors in jet black and deep, deep shades of yellow for a new cuff bracelet. This one is going to have a pattern that I’ve been meaning to use for years. It’s another piece for my big project, which is getting closer to completion every week. I’m really looking forward to the big reveal.

I haven’t pulled the colors yet, but I’m also planning a new daisy chain collar with black and yellow. I’ve been seeing the combination a lot lately, especially on Polyvore, and I couldn’t resist using it in a quick project. I suppose it might be the fact that summer is about to end, but I’m craving some bright colors and contrasts.

Black and Yellow Beadwork in Progress

I’ll be starting the new collar as soon as our dove embroidery pendant is done. I love the colors that my little designer has picked for this one (I’m secretly hoping for one more round of lemon lime). I was working on a freeform piece with baroque pearls on the side, but the beadwork came out too tight and all wonky, so I’m turning it into a necklace for myself, whenever I get around to finishing it.

I’ve also got some new materials on the way that I can’t wait to try out. I’m planning a new stringing experiment and I think (hope!) that this one will turn out much better than the ones before it. I’m still trying to work out what I’m going to do with all the sari silk I bought.

Mood Board: Pina Colada

It wouldn’t be summer on Inspirational Beading without a little pina colada inspiration. I suppose I could be a little obsessed with pineapple and coconut, but there’s just something about tropical yellow and blue that makes for irresistible summer palettes.

For today’s mood board I combined fruity elements with shades of yellow, blue, and cream - and a little cherry on top. I had hoped to find lots of natural bead jewelry with coconut wood, acai and the like. I did find a really fun coconut statement necklace, and an abundance of pineapple inspired jewelry. Although transparent blues would really enhance the tropical feel, I had to settle for fabrics this time around - the do pair up nicely with creams and browns.

Pina Colada

The pina colada bead selections include some matte accents with natural coconut shell and coconut wood, plus lovely transparent seed beads. Though the hybrid seed beads don't fit with the transparent theme, they do make a great stand-in for fresh coconut! I went with a matte finish in yellow to get that really fruity look, and the blue seed beads are ocean waves all the way.

Mood Board: Mother’s Day Dandelions

Happy Mother’s Day, beaders! I hope that all of the moms out there are getting lots of love, or that you’re able to spend time with a mom that you care about.

Whenever this special holiday comes along, I always think of a bouquet of dandelions. They are the one bouquet that truly comes from the heart - hand picked by tiny hands for the absolute pleasure of it. Some may think of dandelions as weeds, but we love them at our house. They’re natural, resilient, and beautifully yellow - and they are the first food for bees and other pollinating insects each spring. Not to mention how much fun they are once they go to seed.

Dandelions and Honey

In honor of dandelions, bees, and all things Mom, I’ve put together a new mood board that speaks of spring delights. With an abundance of greens and yellows, these picks are warm and cheerful. Perfect for an outdoor mother-daughter or mother-son tea party.

Finding beads to create these looks was delightfully easy. It turns out that dandelions and spring greens are a popular inspiration. I combined two-toned beads and materials with dandelion motifs and symbols of friendship. These components would make delightful necklace and charm bracelet sets!

Mood Board: Fiesta

Although I love all four seasons just as much as anyone, as far as I’m concerned the months of the year are best divided into two categories: those when you can wear shorts, and the rest. So now that Easter is behind us, I’m ready to put away the pretty pastels and bring on the heat!

For this month’s mood board, I’ve refined the look a bit, and reserved the bead picks for their own mosaic. I started with a sort of Cinco de Mayo theme in mind, and searched for exciting statement pieces, hot colors, and a hint of natural goodness. With so many multicolor and mixed media jewelry pieces to showcase, I chose a simple but still interesting dress for a background. The huge daisy print is definitely a great show-stopping complement to the full-texture jewelry.

Fiesta

In a beaded design, this theme could be carried out not just with color, but with carefree abandon. Lots of unique elements, some freeform techniques, and a mix of materials would make the look. For this mood, I chose lots of multicolored beads and mixes, then added some bright pops of color and a few more of those natural elements. Honestly, it was a challenge not to just look for the most exciting bead mixes and those with a multicolored finish. This theme really calls for some big statement beads to bring everything together. These are my picks for perfect summer explosion designs:

Summer Fiesta Bead Inspirations

1. Red Jasper Seed Bead Mix by Spirit Bear Beads
2. Murano Diamond Pendant from Artbeads.com
3. Ashanti Glass Disc Beads from Happy Mango Beads

4. Saffron Recycled Glass Rounds from Auntie's Beads

6. Paper Flower Lampwork Beads by Mermaid Glass

7. Rainbow Mix Seed Beads from Beadaholique
8. Chili Pepper Glass Beads from Strum and Sparkle

Work in Progress: Spicy Summer Collar

At last things are starting to move along on my bead tray. I feel like I’ve been working on this collar for ages, but it should be finished and ready to photograph by tomorrow. I can’t wait to start something new!

I made several small adjustments to the pattern that I shared on last week's bead tray. All of the colors and the pattern are the same, but I found that I didn’t like the color proportions. The first thing I did was shrink the yellow by changing the edging of the nets, and I was much happier with how it looked overall. Although I was hoping for a sort of African tribal look with this collar, I’m still really pleased with the more fiesta-like feel it has.

Spicy Fiesta Collar in Progress

I’m also wrapping up a new medallion pendant. I promise I’ll reveal the big secret behind them soon! As soon as I remember to pick up some more knot sealer - aka clear nail polish - I’ll be able to photograph the finished pieces that I have for the big reveal.

Bead Color Ideas: Polka Dots

Many shapes and patterns are always appealing wherever they go. Some are comfortable and familiar, while others inspire energy and vim. Spirals, rainbows, and concentric circles are just a few examples of the motifs that draw us in time and again.

Polka dots are also a favorite pattern - they’re cheerful and carefree in any palette. Sometimes they can remind us of a favorite fabric, or of natural pleasures like lady bug wings. This month, I did a little color experiment with spotted glass eye rondelles from Happy Mango Beads. With a soft lavender gray as a base color, the overlapping yellow, green and red dots really stand out. These Java glass beads are both youthful and organic, with a little tribal flair.

Birds Nest Bead Color Idea

The first trio has all the elements of an early spring day - a bright blue sky and new eggs in a Birds Nest. I started with a little contrast by adding some turquoise blue Czech white hearts. The light-filled color works perfectly with the bright polka dots. Then I added a little more light in a neutral color with transparent dark topaz seed beads, adding to the earthy effect of the accents.

Ladybug Picnic Bead Color Idea

Moving down to the ground for a Ladybug Picnic, I started with some spring green seed beads in opaque cactus. This lively shade looks fantastic with the dark yellow spots, as well as complimenting the pale green ones. The palette is finished with a double dose of color in gorgeous red lined sapphire.

Cheep Cheep Bead Color Idea

The final trio brings to mind new baby chicks with a focus on sunny yellow. Opaque dark yellow 8/o seed beads provide a vibrant backdrop for the polka dots, while lustered orange adds a little warmth. Despite the intense colors, Cheep Cheep is comforting, while also bringing to mind lots of tasty Easter treats.

Spring Jewelry Colors Part Three

Dazzling Blue, Freesia and Sand Color Trio

For our final look at Pantone’s spring colors, I’ve saved the best trio for last. This combination of Dazzling Blue, Freesia Yellow, and Sand is so intense and tropical, it totally drives the winter blues away. Emily Saunders’ sketch with shorts and stockings definitely speaks of early summer, and those perfectly warm days that arrive right on the tails of spring.

Statement jewelry is even better when it includes bold, contrasting colors. Blue and yellow are eye-catching and exciting in any design, but I was particularly thrilled with a gorgeous leather cut-out necklace by Boo and Boo Factory. I paired it with two equally cute outfits including shorts and layered tops.

The warmth of Sand is a perfect neutral in this trio, adding a touch of earthiness to balance everything out. This is especially helpful when working with prints, and the beige pieces make a great backdrop.
