Poster Sketch: Feathered Friends

There’s something incredibly peaceful, even uplifting, about waking up to see a handful of robins grazing for bugs on the back lawn. Hearing the cheerful peep-peep of finches as they flit about on their tiny tasks is another wonderful way to start a day.

The sudden appearance of birds is one of the things that makes spring such a magical time of year. One day you’re wondering if you’ll ever see color again, and the next day you’re eager to buy some bird seed and make a few new friends.

This week’s Poster Sketch is dedicated to the return of our favorite birds, home from their yearly vacation and ready to charm us with their songs and antics.

Poster Sketch: The Sunshine Award

Earlier this month I was treated to the Sunshine Award for inspiring bloggers, courtesy of Carolyn Good of 2 Good Claymates. It’s always exciting to receive an award from another blogger, and not only because of the compliment behind it. Following the trail of links left by each award is a great way to find new and interesting blogs to read and enjoy.

The rules for accepting the Sunshine Award are:
- Put the logo on your blog or within your post.
- Pass the award onto 12 bloggers.
- Link the nominees within your post.
- Let the nominees know they have received this award by commenting on their blog.
- Share the love and link to the person from whom you received this award.

I also love blog awards because it gives me a chance to have a good look at my reading list, visit my favorite blogs, and trim those that seem to be forgotten. These are some of the blogs that really stand out in the crowd:

Poster Sketch: Sweet and Sour Ring

Sour Apple Sweet Violet Ring by The Sage's Cupboard
Ring # 11 - Sour Apple Sweet Violet

It occurred to me recently that I don’t use purple often enough. It’s such a wonderful color, found in flowers and foods and summer sunsets. I’ve become determined to add a little more purple to my repertoire, even though I only have a handful of purple beads to work with.

My first attempt at using purple turned out a little on the green side. I started with one of my favorite shades of color-lined seed beads - wisteria. Then I started mixing up a palette, and ended up making a little patch of violets on a bright green background. I wouldn’t exactly say that this is a purple ring, but it does have a hint of it!

I like the energetic combination of wisteria and chartreuse so much, that it inspired today’s Poster Sketch/Treasury collection. To learn more about the artists behind these designs, visit Sweet and Sour.

Poster Sketch: Beads, Potions and Trinkets

Any beader will tell you that a vial of beads is like a magic potion - open it, and wondrous things will occur. From the moment we spill those beads out onto our work surface, our imaginations soar. When we finally complete our creation, the magic continues to dazzle.

Beads themselves can be used to make all manner of coffers for treasures and trinkets. This week’s Poster Sketch is dedicated to marvelous bead containers - from beaded bowls to potion necklaces. These beautiful vessels are just as beautiful and magical as the items they carry.

Poster Sketch: Almost Twilight

If you go to Etsy.com and type “Twilight” into the Handmade search bar right now, you will find yourself with over 800 pages of results. Somewhere around 40 of those pages will include Scrabble tile pendants and the materials to make them. On Artfire.com, the results are well over 100 pages of Cullen Family Crests and some pretty exceptional fan art. (The secret lesson here may be that if your handmade products don’t appeal to teenagers, perhaps they should!)

This week’s Poster Sketch showcase features items that could be treasured by Twilight fans, and everyone else, too. There are no Edward Cullen Domino pendants, or Team Jacob bottle cap charms. Of these 16 items, only one is directly inspired by Stephenie Meyer’s vampire saga. Can you tell at first glance which one it is?

The fourth item, “Rutilated Amethyst and Sapphire Necklace”, is from Tasi Designs - the team that created much of the jewelry seen in the first Twilight film. These talented ladies are still creating the simple and beautiful style of jewelry that made it to the silver screen, including a collection of wardrobe replicas.

Poster Sketch: Team Oh Canada

Canada is an interesting place. It’s an enormous country, in terms of land mass, but the habitable terrain is limited. Compared to countries of similar size, our population is tiny. When Canadians travel abroad, people say the most curious things to us. When we visit the United States, we dread the inevitable “Do you know Bob Smith from Toronto?”. When we visit Europe, people are shocked that we’ve never been to cities on the other side of our own country.

Although we are few, we aren’t exactly as connected as people may think we are. And that’s why it’s so great to be able to interact with other Canadians over the internet. Recently, a new Etsy Team was formed that is open to Canadian sellers of all kinds - giving us all a chance to meet each other, offer support, and share our experiences.

The Oh Canada Team is still in it’s developing stages, but there are already a great deal of unique and interesting sellers in the group. This week’s poster sketch features just a handful of the amazing bead and jewelry designs from team members.

You can see even more great designs by adding the tag “OhCanadaTeam” to your searches on Etsy.com.

Poster Sketch: Spring Flowers

As artists, it’s very important that we occasionally look up from our work and smell the flowers. This isn’t just because it’s good to take a break once in awhile, or take some time to embrace the little things in life. The beauty of nature is such a wonderful source of inspiration, and if we’re always at the workbench, we might miss it. This week’s Poster Sketch is dedicated to one of Spring’s most precious treasures - the flower. These creations could not be possible without the help of a little muse called Nature.

Poster Sketch: Handmade Artists Team

Being a crafter in the internet age is a truly remarkable thing. We have access to an endless supply of materials from all over the world. We can learn a new skill by downloading a PDF or watching a video. We can create and print patterns from our favorite images. And the best part - we can meet with other crafters to share ideas, knowledge, and support.

One of the most active teams in the Etsy community is the HAF Team. The group is made up of members of the Handmade Artists Forum - a place to meet with others who make and sell handmade products. Though they may create different things, these crafters and designers have come together to share, learn and promote handmade.

This week’s Poster Sketch is a delightful collection of bead treasures from HAF Etsy sellers. You can also see the team’s other unique creations by searching for “HAFTeam” on Etsy.com.

Poster Sketch: Very Cherry Ring

Bowl of Cherries Ring by The Sage's Cupboard
Ring # 18 - Bowl of Cherries

I must confess something. I am running out of ring ideas.

I’ve done some experimenting of the past 18 days, looking for new design styles to add to my ring beading repertoire. I enjoyed making all of them, but I feel strangely attached to the styles I had made my own months ago. I have already decided to stick with what works, but I’m having a hard time letting go of the idea of making something completely new every day.

Today’s ring was a comfort to create. Using my favorite herringbone band style, I created a bowl of cheerful cherries. When I was making this piece, I was imagining a blue glass bowl, sitting in a square of sunlight on a vintage-yellow countertop. The bowl was full of cherries.

This inspiration couldn’t have come at a better time. With the end of the week finally here, and time for another Poster Sketch collection, I was very excited to create a treasury to match this fruity ring. While putting this group together, I noticed that I also have a very repetitive curating style: 3 parts jewelry + 1 part art. Well, it works for me!

Poster Sketch: The Tree of Life

The affinities of all the beings of the same class have sometimes been represented by a great tree... As buds give rise by growth to fresh buds, and these if vigorous, branch out and overtop on all sides many a feebler branch, so by generation I believe it has been with the great Tree of Life, which fills with its dead and broken branches the crust of the earth, and covers the surface with its ever branching and beautiful ramifications.

- Charles Darwin, 1859

The term “Tree of Life” means different things to many people. It is a common concept in many cultures, similar to the Gaia Theory, in which all living things are connected and together make up a single entity or organism. Images of this great tree are breathtakingly beautiful, and artists from all mediums often try to convey their unique interpretation of it.

This week’s Poster Sketch is dedicated to the Tree of Life, which is a popular muse for many jewelry artists. Featured in this collection are a few examples of how the tree can be recreated in jewelry, as well as a few inspiring and colorful images by our fellow artists.

Poster Sketch: Sugar Plums

No matter what denomination you are, or how you feel about the holidays, there is no denying that December is a time for delicious treats. There are pies and tarts, candies and chocolates, and a lot of fancy cheese. This is the only time of year when you can get a carton of eggnog, or 20 kinds of shortbread at any store. December is also the time of year when we roll up our sleeves and make things from scratch, because it’s worth it to make something a little extra special.

One holiday treat that I’ve never had the pleasure of sampling is the sugar plum. One hears about them all the time - visions of them dance in our heads. I always pictured some kind of purplish cake made with juice and sprinkled with sugar. Apparently they’re just round candy.

Nonetheless, this week’s Poster Sketch is dedicated to juicy oranges and purples - the colors of sweet plums.

Poster Sketch: Angels, Demons and Deities

No matter how long or how fiercely a civilization worships their deities, once that culture has been forgotten, the gods and goddesses enter the realm of mythology. When Jupiter and the rest of the Roman pantheon was replaced by Christianity, it was the start of a great many changes to come. Although some of the traditions that would follow were often influenced by local legend, the far reaching influence of the Roman Empire would eventually bring an end to the pagan way of life.

While the age of technology has changed many things, art continues to be largely influenced by faith, new and old. This week’s Poster Sketch is dedicated to some of the more magical and legendary themes of earlier times, as well as the pagan themes that still thrive beneath the surface.

Poster Sketch - Earth Meets Fire

When designing jewelry with a touch of nature, some obvious bead choices would be natural ones like wood, tagua, or shell. These materials make for beautiful accents, and certainly give an organic quality to jewelry. One material that is too often overlooked is ceramics or earthenware. Not only do they have an earthy quality to them, but the artists that make them also infuse them with gorgeous shapes, colors and textures. This week’s Poster Sketch offers up some wonderful examples of fired earth beads, pendants and cabochons.

Poster Sketch: CafeMoms

Ask any beader what he or she loves about the craft, and they will most likely tell you that it is a relaxing - even Zen-like - experience. Beading and creating jewelry is a meditative art that allows us to escape into a world of pretty, shiny things. Busy moms are often the most appreciative of beading time, and most of us would rather play with beads than read a book or indulge in a bubble bath. As an added bonus, we can use our hobby to earn a few extra dollars for all the things we need for our little ones.

There are a great many Street Teams on Etsy that are dedicated to busy moms who make and sell just about anything you can imagine. This week’s Poster Sketch features some of the wonderful jewelry designs of the CafeMoms Team. You can see more of this team’s creations by searching “CafeMom Team” on Etsy.com.

Inspiration Tip: Sharing Etsy Treasuries

Coral and Chartreuse Treasury by bstudio.etsy.com

Every week, I search through the zillions of Etsy listings, hunting for 16 amazing pieces of jewelry or beaded art. Using Etsy’s Poster Sketch tool, I share my finds here on Inspirational Beading. The entire process is a great way to meet other artists and to see new works of bead art.

Recently, I was asked to share the secret behind the Poster Sketch segments. The technique I use to share my Etsy finds can also be used to show completed treasuries on a blog or website. This process is great if you’ve been featured in a treasury, or have made one that you want to share, and you want to preserve it. Because Etsy treasuries expire, it’s nice to have a record of the short time in the spotlight. Making a treasury is a lot of work, and the results are often beautiful. Keeping and displaying your favorite treasuries can be a great source of inspiration in the future.

I’m going to list each step as clearly as possible, so if you’re just getting to know your computer or the internet, hopefully these instructions will be helpful to you. Note: I’m working with Windows and Mozilla Firefox, but these steps are pretty universal for PC users.

One: Open your internet browser and find the treasury that you wish to save. Scroll down so that all of the items are centered in the window, and nothing is cut off.

Two: Take a screenshot of the page to capture the treasury. Hold Ctrl on your keyboard, and press Print Screen [Prt Scr].

Pre-shrink the Page

Three: Open the Paint tool in Accessories. To avoid any unwanted border on your image, you can pre-shrink the page. Scroll down to the bottom right hand corner of the white canvas, and use your cursor to grab and drag the corner of the page up and to the left. Shrink the canvas so that it is smaller than a treasury.

Four: Paste the treasury screenshot onto the page. Hold Ctrl and press V. Save this page if you want - you can always delete it later.

Select the Cut Tool

Five: Click on the tool icon that shows a dotted rectangle. Use your mouse to draw a box around the treasury, only capturing what you want to show. Leave a few mm of boarder around the edge, and try to make all of the sides evenly spaced.

Cut Away Only the Treasury

Six: From the Edit drop down menu, select Cut, or press Ctrl + X. Open a New blank page in Paint. Do not save the changes to the current file.

Seven: Pre-shrink the canvas, and paste your treasury snippet onto the blank page [Ctrl + V]. Save the new file with a unique name - I usually use Month/Year/Curator. Be sure to save it as a JPEG file, not a BMP.

Now that you have this image of your treasury, you can upload it and share it almost anywhere you want to. A few good places to show off an Etsy treasury are your Facebook page, Flickr pool, and your blog. Most blog platforms allow you to upload and display images from your computer; but with a few extra steps, you can show off your treasury, and improve the look and SEO of your blog at the same time.

One: You will need to upload your treasury snippet to an image hosting site like Photobucket. Be sure to upload it to the correct album or sub-album. If necessary, relocate the file before completing the next steps.

Grabbing a URL from Photobucket

Two: Copy the Direct Link URL for your hosted image.

Three: At the point in your blog text where you want to display your treasury, type the following code:

<img src="YourImage" alt="ImageTitle" title="ImageTitle">

Replace YourImage with the URL for your picture. Replace ImageTitle with a name for your picture. The alt tag will create a text caption if viewers have HTML turned off, or if the image doesn’t load properly. You’ve probably seen these before. Instead of a picture, a box with a red X will appear, and if the alt tag is used, the name of the image will also show. The title tag will create the yellow caption that appears when you hover your cursor over an HTML image. Both of these tags can also help your picture and blog show up in search engines, so it’s a good idea to use relevant keywords in your image title.

You will need to add this code in the HTML editor of your blog platform. If you would like the image to be a clickable link to another destination, you can highlight the code, and use the link tool of your blog editor to add the destination URL. You can also add the code by hand. It will look like this:

<a href="Destination URL" target="_blank"><img src="YourImage" alt="ImageTitle" title="ImageTitle"></a>

If you want to link back to the actual treasury that you are sharing, remember that Etsy treasuries eventually expire. Broken links aren’t good for SEO (Search Engine Optimization), so it’s a good idea to remove the link code after the treasury has expired.

The target=“_blank” code will make the link open in a new window (unless the viewer right clicks or has tabbed browsing set up). This will make sure that readers don’t lose track of your blog when checking out your link.

Four: Set the alignment for your image.

To center the picture between paragraphs, enter the HTML on a new line, and add paragraph tags to center it. It will look like this:

<p align="center"><img src="YourImage" alt="ImageTitle" title="ImageTitle"></p>

You can also make the text of your blog post wrap around the image if it is on the left or right of the page. To do this, add the code to the first line of the paragraph where you would like the image to be. Replace <p align="center"> with

All About the Blues Treasury by SimpleSundries.etsy.com

<p style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 10px 10px 10px 10px;"> for right hand images

or

<p style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px;"> for left hand images.

To make a handy reference of the HTML code, you can highlight and copy it, and save it to a text file, like Notepad or WordPad.

Now that you can preserve your favorite Etsy treasuries, there’s even more incentive to get out and try one. To find out when a new spot will open up, check in with the Treasury Clock on Craftopolis.com. It keeps track of Treasury Main and Treasury West, and provides a countdown to the next opening. Have fun!

Poster Sketch: Blue and Yellow

I’m a big fan of the beadwork of color expert Margie Deeb. Her use of color is always beautiful to behold, and could turn even the most un-crafty person into a life-long bead lover. Her tips and ideas for combining interesting colors are always inspiring. Through classes and her blog, she encourages beaders to use bold contrasts for maximum visual appeal. Some of my favorite challenges have been combining purple with yellow, and blue with orange.

In honor of these wonderful color adventures, this week’s Poster Sketch is filled with pieces that combine two color wheel opposites: blue and yellow. Each unique pair of shades and hues tells a different story. As beaders, we are so very lucky to have so many wonderful colors at our fingertips.

Poster Sketch: Heavenly Bodies

Lights in the sky, and objects in the universe, are doubly fascinating. They are distant and mysterious - full of possibilities. They are also strangely linked to everyday life here on Earth. The sun makes things grow, while the moon directs the ocean’s flow. The stars and constellations have helped shape our calendar and guide us through unexplored territory.

This week’s Poster Sketch/Treasury East is dedicated to all of those glowing, sparkling orbs that draw us in, despite how very distant they truly are. To get a closer look at these amazing designs and their creators, check out Bright Sky Lights.
